Overcoming Diabetes to Enjoy Healthy Aging

By:

Diabetes is a very serious and difficult disease to control. Once you've been diagnosed with diabetes, your life will never be the same again. However, with the right decisions, you can be as otherwise healthy as you ever were before. But aging healthfully when you have diabetes is a challenge. You will have to completely change the way you eat. You'll need to exercise daily.

Type 2 Diabetes

Diabetes is what some refer to as a lifestyle disease. In other words, it's a disease you get from not living a healthy lifestyle. Some people are more prone to diabetes than others, but nearly everyone can avoid type 2 diabetes altogether by living a healthy lifestyle. If you ignore diabetes, you can suffer loss of limbs, loss of eyesight, and a variety of other serious diseases. All of this takes place because your body can no longer release enough insulin to keep up with your sugar consumption.

Before you get diabetes, you get what is known as insulin resistance. In most cases, insulin resistance can be treated without taking any injections or medications, if you're willing to make full lifestyle changes under the care of your doctor. If insulin resistance goes undetected for a long period of time it becomes a full-blown case of diabetes. Treatment ranges from pills, exercise, and dietary changes to insulin injections, exercise, and dietary changes.

Catching Diabetes Early

First of all, if you're not exercising regularly, you're overweight, or you don't eat healthy food, there is a good chance you're on your way to diabetes if you don't have it already. You should get regular medical checkups and discuss the possibility with your doctor. A simple fasting glucose test will reveal whether or not you have diabetes.

You need to be particularly diligent if you find yourself thirsty all of the time but unable to quench your thirst. Urinating often is another symptom. You may also have dizzy spells or feel lightheaded regularly. Unexplained changes in your weight may also be a symptom of diabetes.

Avoiding Diabetes

Diabetes used to be thought of as an adult disease, but changes in cultural lifestyle have made it a disease for all ages. The best way to avoid getting diabetes is to live a healthy lifestyle. In other words, sleep regularly at night, eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, avoid meats and sugary foods, exercise daily, and get plenty of rest. If you're overweight, you need to get your weight under control.

Dealing with Diabetes

The best treatment for diabetes is the same as the best method of preventing diabetes. A healthy lifestyle is essential for diabetics. But, you also need to follow your doctor's orders. You may find that you need to drink more water than ever. Avoid the temptation to drink anything other than water. Your doctor will likely get you started testing your own blood sugar levels regularly so you can learn how to keep them under control.

It is essential that you keep your diabetes under control, if you want to maintain your health as you age. A failure to live a healthy lifestyle will have an even more pronounced impact on your health when you have diabetes. So take control of your life by controlling your diabetes so you live a long and vital life.
